South Africa’s best known branding and advertising expert
Andy Rice is probably South Africa’s best-known branding and advertising expert.
He combines his professional brand consulting experience with his reputation as the co-host of Talk Radio 702’s popular “AdFeature with Andy Rice” to create keynote presentations that memorably fuse wit with wisdom.
- Lessons in Brand Leadership for Business Leadership
The what, why, how and who of using strong brands to create competitive advantage. An essential review of best practice for marketers and non-marketers alike
- Death by a Thousand Cuts
How the marketer’s primary weapon, creativity, is under threat from all sides and what we can all do to restore and sustain its central role
- Someone’s Got to Do It – What I Learned in Cannes
The Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity is the world’s premier advertising and brand communications event. As a delegate in 2014 and a juror in 2015, Andy distils the latest trends from presentations by the best global thinkers and practitioners
- Economics That Makes Sense!
An introduction to the fast-growing discipline of Behavioural Economics and why no marketer can afford to ignore what happens when classical economics meets human psychology
Andy is a leading figure in the South African brand communications industry and has served as Chair of the Jury of the Apex Awards for marketing effectiveness for more than a dozen years. In 2015 his professional standing was acknowledged by his appointment as a juror at the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity.
Using a combination of his background as a brand and marketing strategist and his broadcasting experience on similar topics, Andy has found that there is an important but largely unfulfilled niche for a speaker/presenter who can stimulate new thinking about the role of brands and marketing within commercial organisations – and who can deliver the topic with a mixture of wisdom and wit.
This is particularly valuable when presented at clients’ annual conferences, where staff are exposed to the company’s future business strategy, and need to understand their role in fulfilling it. It is now commonly accepted by marketers that every employee (and most external stakeholders as well) must contribute, through their behaviour and attitude, to the external perception of a company’s brand(s). This message doesn’t always get through to staff beyond the marketing department and Andy’s presentations, whether as a keynote speaker or part of a team of contributors, are designed to accelerate understanding of this message.
Andy also regularly delivers presentations on the future of brand communications (with his own views on social media paramount), on the increasingly important role of the corporate brand, on the growing threat to creativity within marketing and even a 90-minute crash course on the essentials of brand strategy and communication.
As a strategist he headed up Ogilvy Johannesburg’s account planning department before founding Yellowwood, a specialist brand strategy consultancy that grew to become South Africa’s leader in its field. Yellowwood is now part of the TBWA empire, with Andy continuing to stay involved as Chairman.
He has contributed numerous articles and opinion pieces to marketing journals and publications such as The Annual, The Journal, AdVantage and Brands and Branding in South Africa.
We found your presentation extremely interesting and I have already seen some of the ideas that it has sparked from the attendees. It definitely made us realise that customer service is situated at various points of the company and that we, as the marketing/brand heads, need to have more involvement in these areas. Your presentation was definitely inspirational and I am hoping it will develop ideas that make positive changes within our group.

Thank you again for presenting the opening keynote address at the SAMRA conference.
The feedback about your presentation was very positive. In fact, we survey the audience for what we call the “People’s Choice Award” each year, and your presentation was placed second with only a very small margin after the winning People’s Choice Award presentation.
Thanks again, and congratulations!
Please accept my thanks for your inspiring address at the recent BHF conference – “The Power of Now – Into the changing future”. The enormous positive response we have received about the conference is thanks largely to contributions such as yours, which was both informative and motivating.
