Dr Rutendo Hwindingwi has an insatiable desire to see the exponential growth of business in Africa as well as a passion for the development of Africa’s greatest resource – its people.
He oversees strategies and operations in Africa for one of the ‘Big 4’ Auditing, Accounting and Consulting Firms, with an especially close focus on business development. Amongst his other achievements Dr Rutendo has vast experience in leading business development teams in Africa, Australia, Middle and Australasia in the business management software industry. In the last few years Dr Rutendo was part of an executive leadership that was responsible for the formulation and deployment of an aggressive business development strategy in Southern, East and West Africa.
In his keynote presentation titled ‘Business in Africa – Rumble in the Jungle Reloaded’ Dr Rutendo gives remarkable insight into practical insights on what corporates need to do to increase their footprint in the African market. With reference to one of the most famous sporting events that occurred on African soil i.e. Rumble in the Jungle, Dr Rutendo is able to unpack from this some crucial insights on business development strategy. Over and above this Dr Rutendo reinforces his presentation with sound business theory gathered from past research. Rutendo joined Sage Enterprise – a division of Sage South Africa – as a new business executive in 2006 and was promoted. His primary role was selling Sage business management software solutions to the mid to large corporate companies in South Africa.
In 2008 Rutendo was promoted to the role of Divisional Director for Sage Pastel International Division. In this role Rutendo was responsible for heading up strategies and operations for Sage Pastel in the regions of Africa, Australia, Middle East and Asia with a primary focus on Africa. During his period Rutendo was able to lead the team that grew business revenue significantly for Sage Pastel in Africa.
In 2015 Rutendo was promoted to be the Divisional Director responsible for Sage in East and West Africa. In his new position Rutendo was responsible for strategically leading the teams and operations in that region in line with the Sage strategy targeted for the Small Startup Business (SSB), Small to Medium Business (SMB) and Enterprise Business. In his first year in this role the region achieved over 70% !!! year on year growth in new business revenue.
In September 2016 Rutendo joined Deloitte as an Associate Director. He is part of the Technology and Outsourcing Team that is a strategic business unit in Deloitte focussed on offering technology solutions to companies operating in Africa.
Prior to 2006 Rutendo was based in Zimbabwe where he worked in a number of companies which includes being a business systems analyst and consultant at Manica Freight Zimbabwe. He also spent some time with Deloitte & Touche Zimbabwe as a trainee articles clerk.
From 2000 through 2005 prior to relocating to South Africa, Rutendo was Head of the biggest Distributor of Sage, Chips Computing Services, on the African continent at the time. Due to the socio, economic and political challenges that Zimbabwe was going through at the time Rutendo had to learn to run a business successfully in a highly volatile business environment that had triple digit inflation.
Rutendo holds an executive diploma in business leadership from the Zimbabwe Institute of Management and a Master of Science in Strategic Management from the UK’s Derbyshire Business School.
He also holds a PhD from the University of Witwatersrand, having completed a doctorate on the impact of institutional factors on multinational companies operating in African emerging markets.

At the annual Sage Business Partner Event held at the Holiday Inn Hotel Accra Ghana some 10 years back, I witnessed Dr H delivering a keynote on the strategic importance of accounting tools. Not only did he have mastery of the topic, but also a unique way of taking his audience along. His localisation of greeting the audience in the local Akan language added a great interpersonal touch. Dr H is forthright with his delivery but never intimidates, he commands respect and is a well researched subject matter expert focusing on strategy.
