Ursula Chikane (née Stapelfeldt) is one of the most popular presenters in South Africa. A radio and television personality best known for hosting her own show on 5FM (using the handle “Brown Sugar”), and for co-presenting the lifestyle magazine programme Top Billing, on SABC3. She is also known for hosting the reality competition show MTN Gladiators.
Ursula Chikane is a broadcaster, content producer, volunteer worker, small business owner, and public speaker whose motto is: It’s your job, do it well!
She began her career as a sports and OB (outside broadcast) specialist presenter and went on to become one of South Africa’s most versatile radio and television broadcasters. Ursula is highly regarded as a corporate-events presenter and is known for her professional, infectious and personable presentation manner and is hailed by many of the country’s top bureaus and talent agencies as one of Southern Africa’s leading conference and gala event hosts. Often travelling extensively, both domestically and internationally, her impressive client base is testament to the level at which she delivers – with many booking her services for future events up to several months in advance.
On television, Ursula is one of SABC 3 Top Billing’s most seasoned presenters. Described as an elegant, fun, fearless and eloquent entertainer this thrill-seeker is also an adventure sports enthusiast and lists river rafting, skydiving, CrossFit training and boxing among her favourite off-screen activities.
On radio, Ursula has joined Gauteng-based Power98.7 and keeps her growing listenership company on her specialist classic soul and R&B show, Soul Power. Her previous radio incarnations include the widely syndicated trans-African chart show, Jammin’ Africa, produced by Radio Express in Hollywood, California. Many a radio enthusiast will remember “BrownSugar” from her World Chart Show on 5fm days.
Over the years Ursula has interviewed a number of leading music, movie, sport and television stars for both local and international consumption. As one of Top Billing’s original presenters, she’s been granted access to and interviewed (amongst many others) former Presidents Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, former Prime Minister Tony Blair, and captains of industry Cyril Ramaphosa, Maria Ramos. On the entertainment side, Ursula’s quiet confidence has given her the ability to interview and profile a host of local and international celebrities including Lira, Thandiswa Mazwai, HHP, Tyra Banks, John Legend, Toni Morrison, Dave Matthews, Iyandla Vanzant, Halle Berry, Drew Barrymore, REM, U2, Gregory Porter, Tutu Puoane, Johnny Clegg, Hugh Masekela, Selaelo Selota, Sibongile Khumalo, Wynton and Delfayo Marsalis, Sting, Colin Farrell, Carlos Santana, Charlize Theron, Samuel L Jackson. After wrapping an interview with internationally celebrated fashion designer, Valentino Garavani, Ursula was warmly praised for the professional manner in which she had prepared and researched the iconic designer’s life and the sincerity with which she conducted the interview.
In her 28th year as a broadcaster, many new and established faces on television and the corporate stage have shared the benefit of her extensive experience and no-nonsense coaching and mentoring approach. A Liberty SA Radio Awards 2017 nomination was the latest in her long list of career achievements.
She has also hosted numerous high profile events such as Miss South Africa Pageant, the Presidential Sport Awards, and countless corporate functions, and was a presenter on 5FM for 10 years, and guest presenter on Radio Express in Los Angeles, California.
This Public Relations graduate’s first job was a Sports presenter for TopSport on SABC, covering events such as Wimbledon and the build up to the Atlanta Olympics.
From there she became the Anchor of two extreme Sport programmes, Mild 2 Wild and Time Out, as well as anchor of the first regional television morning show on the Western Cape’s RWC TV on Cape Town Live.
Ursula was also the host of the first two seasons of the reality competition show Bar One Manhunt, from 2010-2012. She was replaced for Season 3 by Tshepo “Howza” Mosese.
Ursula has travelled the globe for various media assignments, and luxuriates in her travels. “My love of travel has me packed and ready to trot the globe at a moments’ notice. I’ve seen just about every major city on offer and filled seven passports with thrilling memories. How’s that for an abundant blessing!”
